«A major [traveling] exhibition [produced by the Smithsonian Institute, Washington] on the colourful career of Russian-born Alexey Brodovitch, who achieved fame in the United States as a magazine and graphic designer and as a photographer […] The exhibition made its debut at the Philadelphia College of Art. Brodovitch was the founder and first director of the College’s Department of Advertising Design, going there in 1930 from Paris at the invitation of John Story Jenks, a high official in the former Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. Achieving a national reputation as a teacher of design, Brodovitch in 1934 was lured to New York by the legendary Carmel Snow to become art director of Harper’s Bazaar. He is credited with having revolutionized magazine design and fashion photography during his 24-year career there.»
