Erwin Driessens, Maria Verstappen
From October 12th 1995 to November 11th 1995
L'usine / The Factory

IAGO Gallery is the exact replica of an existing structure, a model that can be dismantled and is thus a touring exhibition space. IAGO Gallery has the particularities of an apartment transformed into a gallery. The only constraint for the artist is to obey the reduction scale. IAGO is a project of David Reynaud and Grazia Quaroni, Paris.

In IAGO Gallery, we set up a cyclical process: shapes will be constinuously generated, documented, presented and degenerated. The viewer can look from the outside into the various rooms of the model and see what happens inside.

S/He watches the cycle, from which s/he perceives one phase in each room: an amount of melted wax coagulates by pouring it into cold water, the shape dries by ventilation, the shape is documented on video, the shape is presented to the public, the shape becomes fluid by melting. This cycle repeats itself constantly in the same way, but each time the transformation of the material will be different.

IMA (image generating software)
Computer images generated by means of a specially developed program. An IMA is the result of breeding cells. One single cell functions as a parent cell. This cell has given color. While breeding, a cell divides into four "baby" cells. Their colors are defined by the influence of their surroundings (adjacent cells) combined with their own free will. Repetition of breeding process refines the tissue, and an inpredictable image – with a more or less coherent structure – arises. This program creates an “endless” amount of different images.
