The Concerns of Roman Vishniac : Man, Nature and Science

In part, the exhibition showcases a series of microscopic photographs.

"As one of the world’s foremost photographers of microspic life, his contribution to our understanding of the relationship of nature, man and art through his work in still photography and film is without parallel."
- Internal document (Optica)

"[The exhibition also showcases] studies that Vishniac made of Eastern European Jewish communities in the years 1936-1939. More clear sighted than most of his fellow Jews living in Hilter’s Germany, Vishniac seems to have had a foreboding of the holocaust to come. He felt the urgency of putting on record these ghetto scenes : the life and culture of a people about to disappear. These pictures are not sentimental : they show joy and faith but also sadness and the ravages of hard menial work."
