Jean Lantier
From May 29th 1984 to June 20th 1984
Installation / Peinture

Jean Lantier, who lives and works in Québec City, will be presenting a group of works at Optica, from May 29th to June 20th. The works attempt to explore a complex image-object relationship, and articulate different levels of cultural references.

"I see my work as tending towards what one might call a poetic space. A poetic space that is analogous with dreams, a place where nothing converges towards a specific point, and yet where all that is possible exists. Nothing can be named, nothing can be pinned down, and all is reversible. All meanings, all contents are present but in a latent state. This is a mentally open place where complexity reigns. A metaphoric place.

My work comes out of painting and retains a certain approach to the image and a relationship to the wall. But it is painting exploded, without surface continuity, anchored in islets where the kinds of relationships between the different elements of the work use the language of installation. It is work that talks about image: figuration is present but at the level of sign as a reference allowing for the play of associations which have non-linear and closer to dream than to anecdote.”
