Since its creation in 1972, OPTICA, a centre for contemporary art, has endeavoured to promote contemporary art and has contributed to advancing Montreal’s reputation on the national and international scene. Heavily involved in curatorial research and production, the centre presents a varied, yearly exhibition program, along with conferences and get-togethers with artists and professionals in the art milieu.
OPTICA is looking for an intern to work under the supervision of the communications and archives coordinator. The internship is composed of three parts. In the first, the intern will coordinate the digitization of La demeure, which the centre published in 2008, to make it available for viewing online. In addition, the selected person will help process OPTICA’s paper archives for 2008, as well as participate in developing its documentation centre, which will encompass numerous books on both Canadian and international art. Specifically, the task involves helping to organize the process of indexing the books in the collection.
On completing the internship, the candidate will have gained valuable working experience in information conservation and digitization as well as in project coordination. He or she will also have developed an awareness of the importance of archival preservation for an artist centre and of copyright release procedures. In addition to having examined many artist and exhibition files while processing the OPTICA Archives, he or she will have acquired insight into the organization of exhibitions and the art-book publishing fields in Québec and abroad.
